A Quick Note on Today’s Bad Climate Change News
Rough news out today about climate change. Researchers have suspected that climate change might proceed faster and more dramatically than expected, thanks to positive feedbacks. New research suggests that one of the largest of them is likely to kick in, strongly, in the coming decade.
Here’s how it works:
There’s a lot of dead plant matter frozen in permafrost in many northern regions. If it thaws it’ll rot, releasing a colossal volume of carbon dioxide and methane. Unfortunately, it looks like the Great Rot is underway. Note that as this feedback kicks in, it makes it more likely that other feedbacks will kick in as well.
What does it mean? It could mean we’ve lost control of our climate. It could mean the collapse of civilization in short order as we lose the ability to feed ourselves, among other things. Predicting the future is hard, but signs point to a problem of unimaginable magnitude.
Why am I writing? Read the comments responding to the news in the link above. It’s a pageant resignation and despair. I hate it.
Yes, there may be no hope, yes we may be dead walking. It doesn’t matter. If you want to make life interesting, you fight, and the worse it gets, the harder you fight. You fight until you’re dead.
Act. At the least, before the day is out, send that news item to every person you know and be passionate about it. Resolve to change your life. Resolve to not shut up about climate change until we act, no matter how embarrassing it may be. It’s way past the time for embarrassment.
Despair is for suckers.
